Everything you need to know about the Premier League 2016/17

The new Premier League season is only a few months away, and excitement is already building. Which superstar names will come to England? How will Leicester cope at the top? Which elite manager will reign supreme? Here is everything you need to know before the season kicks off. Leicester City Premier League Champions 2015/16 "Leicester City flag" (CC BY 2.0) by  fourthandfifteen  Title Defense Leicester begin the new campaign as the reigning champions, but Chelsea’s weak title defiance last season will remind them that complacency is not an option. If the Foxes are to go on to greater things, this is just the beginning of their story. Their main priorities will be to try to hold on to the key players that contributed so much to the title triumph, and to strengthen the squad to deal with the forthcoming Champions League commitments. Jamie Vardy, Riyad Mahrez, and N’Golo Kante are all at the heart of transfer speculation, being touted by some of the European elite. To lose any of these key players would be to remove the backbone of this energetic team, and there is a sense that if Claudio Ranieri’s men are to push on, they need to keep this squad together. Manchester United were the last club to win the league title in consecutive years, and that was seven years ago under the management of Sir Alex Ferguson. In recent years the league has become a much closer contest, and the fantastic foxes face a ferocious fight. Ibrahimovic "Ibrahimovic rifila una gomitata e com.me" (CC BY 2.0) by  NazionaleCalcio  Potential Big Name Arrivals Last season, Harry Kane became the first English player to win the golden boot since Kevin Phillips in 1999/2000. He may have a tough time retaining that accolade in the next campaign, though, as there is talk of one of the most prolific strikers in the world coming to the English top flight. According to Sky Sports reports, Zlatan Ibrahimovic will attend Old Trafford for a medical after Euro 2016, and Jose Mourinho will look to pen a lucrative 1-year deal for the towering goal machine. He has averaged over 25 goals per season for the last six years, and his record haul of 38 goals for Paris Saint-Germain last year was his greatest tally to date. The 34-year-old is in the form of his career and, having played in the top flight of four other European countries, should have no problem settling into the Premier League. Arsene Wenger may finally have realised that Arsenal are not going to win the league unless they sign a prolific striker. They have already triggered Vardy’s release clause, but the player is yet to make a decision on the move. Even so, this move is an indication that Wenger is in the market for a top finisher, and if Vardy doesn’t join the Gunners, they will have to find another big name. In the past they have been linked with huge stars like Gonzalo Higuain and Karim Benzema, but so far the speculation has never come to fruition. When Euro 2016 finishes, the transfer market is sure to heat up. Up to this point, though, Ibrahimovic is the only huge name to look certain to move to England. Pep Guardiola "guardiola copia" (CC BY-SA 2.0) by  Òmnium Cultural  Battle of the Elite Managers Last season’s champions placed a heavy focus on quick, counter-attacking football, which at times meant allowing the opposition to dominate possession. It will be interesting to see this philosophy go head to head with Pep Guardiola’s obsession with possession. The two-time Champions league winner has been tasked with raising Manchester City to elite status in Europe, and that means that big changes are coming at the Etihad stadium. But it isn’t just the blue half of Manchester that is going to be facing a serious makeover. Manchester United will be undergoing some corrective surgery under Mourinho as well. These two managers are fierce rivals from their days at Barcelona and Real Madrid respectively, so it is going to be exciting watching the two of them clash once again. Both teams have plenty of money to spend in the transfer window, and this could be a real chance for one of these men to prove who the world’s best manager is. There are a few others that plan to crash the party though. Antonio Conte, the man that took Juventus back to the summit of Italian football, will take over the reins at Chelsea after his Euro 2016 campaign with Italy is over. Conte has shown the merits of good management, with an Italian side that not many favoured to progress in the Euros- in the group stages of the competition they have looked like one of the most cohesive sides. Chelsea will be aiming to start afresh after their dismal display last season, and 2013’s best coach of the year could be the man to rejuvenate them. Jürgen Klopp is also one to watch as he prepares to embark on his first full season in charge at Liverpool. There is sure to a huge upheaval of the squad this summer with big money arrivals and the removal of dead wood. But over on the other side of Liverpool, this season’s dark horses could well be Everton. The new major shareholder Farhad Moshiri has promised to grant Ronald Koeman a record transfer budget for the club. The Dutchman has shown his managerial prestige at Southampton and, with money to spend, could take Everton to new heights. Newly Promoted Teams Last season, Aston Villa, Newcastle, and Norwich were relegated to the Championship. Replacing them in 2016/17 are Burnley, Middlesbrough, and Hull City. With all the factors mentioned above, these teams had better get into their grooves as quickly as possible. This could be the toughest Premier League season ever. The new season gets underway on 13th August 2016. Be there or be square.
