Are you serious? Tottenham Hotspur are Title Contenders?!
Tottenham Hotspur, one of the founding members of the Premier League, have remained in the league since its inception. In fact, the last time they dropped down a division in the last 60 years was in 1977/78. They bounced straight back up though. The Premier League title has consistently alluded them though, with their best-ever finish being fourth place - and even then they have only managed this twice. This season things are different. They are genuine title contenders. Is it absurd, or just a long time overdue?
The History
Spurs have won the top division in England 5 times, despite having been in the mix for well over a hundred years. The last time they won the league was in 1961, when the legendary Bobby Smith put away a whopping 33 goals. With such a long drought without any league trophies, many fans have been resigned to believing that it will never happen again. The Lilywhites now, though, are firmly grounded in a new footballing era for the club. This era arguably began in 2009/10 when Harry Redknapp was at the helm. He steered them to their highest ever league finish that season with fourth place, and began to develop a team that since that season, have never finished outside the top six.The Manager
The Mauricio Pochettino era is looking set to be the biggest in the club's history, as great work is being done to ensure continued success. Although the manager says that he just wants to win each game, he also has long term plans to build the squad, nurture talent and promote from within. The club is in profit, with The Argentine only willing to fork out for players deemed necessary additions. He has proven his confidence in the youth system with players like Harry Kane and Dele Alli, and these players have rewarded his faith by shining as integral members of the team. This season really has shown how far Tottenham have come, and they are now looking very much a title-winning team. But fans are still a bit apprehensive, they have come close in the recent past and been let down, so why should this season prove any different? Many think this Spurs side is the strongest it has been in decades, even more so than the squad that included Gareth Bale and Rafael van der Vaart. There is great understanding between the players, they are well drilled, and know exactly what to do. To watch them now is to watch one of the most exciting teams in the country, and their rise to prominence has been one of the stories of the season. They are such a young team as well, and can only grow and improve more. The Players
There are some serious star players in this Spurs squad that can cut it with the Premier League’s elite, with a few stand-out contenders for Player of the Season already. Last year in Kane’s breakout season he was awarded the PFA Young Player of the Year award, and now his compatriot, Alli, looks like he is about to do the same. He already has 7 goals and 8 assists in the league for the season at the time of writing, and this tally looks to grow even further. It should also be taken into account that for the first 12 games he was fielded in a more defensive role, and most of the attacking returns have happened in the second half of the season while playing in the attacking midfield positions. This output is on a similar level to Christian Eriksen, another star player of the current Tottenham crop. These players have the stamina and the belief to win the league this season. They have already put on very impressive unbeaten streaks and winning runs as well. The signing of the season, perhaps at any Premier League club, is Toby Alderweireld. He has played every minute of the league campaign and has been an absolute stalwart at the back. Spurs have the best defensive record in the league now, and by far the healthiest goal difference of all the title challengers. The defence has been a problem for them in the past but those worries are definitely over. The Spurs centre back pairing of Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen/Kevin Wimmer has been reminiscent of John Terry and Gary Cahill's partnership at Chelsea last season, as they helped Chelsea keep 17 clean sheets - conceding just 32 goals in the process. Spurs are on track to beating that record. The Run-in
The only problem that Spurs may face now is that of fatigue. They are still battling on three fronts, with the league, the Europa League, and the FA Cup still up for grabs. Many fans would probably like to see them just fighting for the league title, but Pochettino has stated that he will try and win every game. It will be a testing period for the Lilywhites, but they have shown such passion and resilience already, they have every chance of ending that ever so long wait for a Premier League trophy this year.[su_button url="https://www.ticketgum.com/tottenham-hotspur-tickets" background="#28356A" size="20" wide="yes" radius="0"]Get Tottenham Tickets[/su_button]
